Regular fecal exams are crucial for cat health, detecting and treating internal parasites.
A fecal examination is the microscopic evaluation of feces. The test is indicated for pets with diarrhea, straining, weight loss, lack of appetite, or vomiting. We may look at the feces passed by a cat to determine if it is infected with internal parasites or abnormal bacteria. Such infections may be contagious within cat species, other animal species, or even people. The exam is not only a valuable tool to maintain individual health, but also the health of all living beings under your roof.
A parasite screen is a simple, in-clinic fecal analysis used to detect internal parasites. Only a small sample is required, and results are typically ready the same day. Sometimes, repeat fecal analysis are required to rule out false negatives or to confirm treatment has been successful.
The test looks for evidence of parasites in their different life stages such as adult worms, larvae, or eggs. Some of these parasites reside in the intestinal tract, but evidence of lung and liver parasites may also be seen. Other infections such as giardia (a water-borne parasite), or unusual bacterial species may also be detected.
A sample of the feces (fresh) needs to be obtained and dropped off at the clinic in a clean container. A veterinary technician will then prepare the fecal sample according to what the vet is looking for based on their physical exam and history of the pet.
Ideally, a fecal sample would be collected in a clean litter box filled with pellet litter, so the sample is not full of clay; however, some cats are particular about their bathroom habits. If you have multiple cats in the home, it is best if you separate the cats to ensure who the sample is from.
